Work as a Healthcare Professional in Slovenia

Recognition of Professional Qualifications

In Slovenia, doctors and dental practitioners (hereinafter referred to as healthcare professionals) are authorized to independently provide medical services, provided they meet the conditions established by labour laws and relevant regulations, as well as the specific requirements of the Medical Services Act (hereinafter referred to as ZZdrS).

To practice medicine independently, healthcare professionals must:

  • Have the necessary educational qualifications and training.
  • Be registered in the doctors’ registry.
  • Possess a valid medical license that authorizes them to provide medical services independently within their professional scope.

Proficiency in the Slovenian Language During Medical Practice

According to Article 11 of the ZZdrS, all healthcare professionals practicing medicine in Slovenia must use the Slovenian language.

Required Levels of Slovenian Language Proficiency

    • Healthcare professionals who provide direct patient care must demonstrate proficiency in Slovenian at level C1 for speaking and level B2 for writing, as per the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

    • For those not directly involved in patient care, a minimum proficiency at level B2 is required, though employers may demand a higher level of Slovenian proficiency if the complexity and nature of the work language necessitate it.
